Interesting geography of Nepal

The territory of Nepal can be compared with a huge staircase that rises to the sky-high peaks of the Himalayas, which has witnessed the emergence of the most ancient cultures and religions of mankind. It consists of stepped ridges separated by depressions. At the very foot of the Himalayas there is a narrow lowland - terrai (200 m above sea level).

To the north are low mountains or the Small Himalayas, consisting of two ridges - Sivalik (700-900 m) and Mahabharat (up to 3000 m). Once at the southern foot of the Mahabharata, the only mountain road that led from India to the capital of Nepal was cut off. From here, all the goods that were present were carried on human shoulders along a narrow winding path.

Between the Small Himalayas and the Main Himalayan Range there is a hilly lowering (600-2000 m) along which Karnali, Bury, San Kosi, Gandaki flow. There were several ancient lakes, on the site of which now lie the Kathmandu and Pokhara valleys.

Well, then the slopes of the Main Himalayan Range begin, the average height of which is 6000 m. Here is located 8 out of 4 eight-thousanders of the world.

The Himalayas do not form ridges stretched over long distances, but disintegrate into separate massifs, separated from one another by deep transverse river valleys. This is due to the fact that the valleys of the largest rivers - Indus, Sutleja, Brahmaputra - were established before the general grandiose rise of the mountains began.

Nepal Rivers

Nepalese rivers are divided into three river systems formed by the tributaries of the great Ganges (in India they change their names):

  1. Karnali  It is located in the west of Nepal - the most remote and unexplored part of it. This is the longest river of Nepal and the most full-flowing tributary of the Ganges. It originates on the Tibetan plateau at the foot of Mount Kailash. You can get to the headwaters either by plane or on foot - there are no roads. It is to the upper tributaries that attracts all lovers of complex kayak expeditions: and Thule Bury. Here, perhaps, still remains the ground for thirsty ascent. But in the lower reaches of the river, before it rolls out onto the terraces, there is one of the most popular mid-term multi-day sections in Nepal -.
  2. Gandaki  It is located in the central part of Nepal (it is from here that we took the name of one of the tours - the Central Rivers of Nepal). The sources originate from the eight-thousanders of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Annapurna I. At its sources are 1,025 glaciers and 338 lakes. There is a great variety of rafting sites of varying complexity: Trisuli, Upper and Lower Kali Gandaki, Marsiandi, Upper and Lower Modi, Networks and others. The main difference from the rivers in the west is the presence of civilization. You can almost always spend the night in warmth and comfort - numerous guesthouses (guesthouse - guest houses) are always ready to receive you, warm you and feed Nepalese dishes. You can choose Pokhara as a base camp and from there go to the rivers, between which it is easiest to travel by local buses - the local bus, which take boats to the roof without problems (it is better to have your own belts).
  3. Koshi (Koshi) And this is the east of Nepal. Here is the legendary that cuts through the Himalayan ridge and originates in Tibet, far beyond the Nepalese border, as well as Dudh Kosi, originating at the foot of Everest and for centuries now accompanying climbers from around the world to the highest peak in the world. Tamba Kosi and Bhoti Kosi also will not leave indifferent river lovers more difficult. But the San Kosi River (Golden River), into which these monsters flow, is almost the easiest expedition in Nepal.

Rafting

Rivers are the main thing
wealth, for which lovers of outdoor activities and real adventures come to Nepal. After the mountains. The mountains of Nepal are unrivaled, but they are the ones who paint the Nepalese rivers in the white color of this extreme sport. The Himalayas offer everything that water tourists need and for every taste - from the most powerful sixes with ice water for professional rafters to warm rivers, where you can, imposingly lying on a raft tank with a spinning rod in your hand, look around and enjoy wildlife views.

How to organize

Of course, you can bring rafts and other equipment to Kathmandu with two or three planes, buy products yourself, hire a car or a team of porters to take them, but this is hardly justified. Nepal is an interesting country, there is where to spend extra time with greater benefit, and fees and troubles are easier to entrust to local professionals. The Nepal Association of Rafting Agencies (NARA) has more than 50 companies. They are all happy to get down to business. There are plenty to choose from! Rafting along the standard route, depending on the duration of the trip and the number of participants in the group, will cost 50-100 USD per person per day. Having entrusted us with the organization of the trip, the day on the river will not rise in price much, but you will get a Russian guide who knows not only everything on the river, but also when and where the fish pecks.

How to choose a river

The river system of Nepal consists of three main parts - the Kosi, Kaligandaki (Gandak) basins, the Karnali basin and the part of the basin of the Mahakali River bordering India, which rafting is easier to organize from the Indian side.
