The combined rating of P4P. Review of world ratings pound for pound. Combined P4P rating Pound for pound value

Pound for pound - designation of the best athlete in a certain type of martial arts, regardless of weight restrictions, i.e. at the same time, both lightweights and heavyweights can be in P4P

Pound-fo-pound made it possible to take a fresh look at the world of martial arts, as spectators and journalists had the opportunity to compare seemingly incomparable things - the most difficult and lightest categories of athletes.

To determine the best Pound-fo-pound, the statistics of fights and their manner of conducting are taken into account. It is impossible to include in the rating a fighter who runs all the time in circles in the ring and wins fights by a separate decision of the judges. To get into P4P you need to fight with the best opponents, since the path is also closed for winning over newcomers.

The most famous Pound-fo-pound in boxing is Sugar Ray Robinson, who spent about 200 fights during his professional career and won in 173, with a knockout of 108. Ring Magazine declared him the best boxer in 2002, no matter the time.

The best Pound Fo Pound of the most prestigious MFC promotion UFC recognized fighter flyweight category Demitrius Johnson. On the second line is the Irish superstar - Conor McGregor.

According to one version, the first fighter in relation to whom the term was applied poundforpound   was the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson, whom many sports experts to this day recognize as the strongest boxer of all time, regardless of weight category, as The Ring magazine does. It is the list of the best boxers of The Ring, since its appearance in 1990, that has been recognized as the most authoritative in the boxing world. However, today, for a number of reasons, which I will discuss below, in order to draw up an objective picture of P4P, in my opinion, it is advisable to consider and take into account other P4P ratings published by various more or less authoritative publications in the boxing world.

Today I will try to review seven P4P ratings, which were compiled by one of the most popular and respected publications in various areas of the media, and based on this review I will try to create my own combined rating poundforpound. So:

1. The Ring Magazine - Perhaps the most authoritative and popular publication in the world dedicated to boxing. Until recently, the p4p rating of The Ring magazine, which was founded in 1922, was considered the most authoritative in the boxing world and was practically an official recognition of the boxer's participation in the p4p list. True, from the moment when Golden Boy Promotions, headed by Oscar de la Hoya (2006), became the owner of the magazine, the objectivity of compiling this rating began to raise doubts about the conflict of interest.

2. TransnationalBoxingRANKINGSBoard (TBRB)   - A non-commercial organization created in 2012 with the aim of compiling the most objective boxing ratings. TBRB members are reputable sports journalists and analysts from 17 countries. TBRB was created by former members of The Ring magazine who disagreed with the magazine’s new policy when compiling the P4P rating adopted after the acquisition of the magazine by Golden Boy Promotions.

3. BoxRec -a boxing site that publishes information on boxers, as well as on current and planned boxing fights. BoxRec publishes ratings for all active boxers, as well as ratings for all boxers who have completed a sports career. BoxRec ratings are also very authoritative and are used by many sports analysts and publications in the world. However, these ratings are often criticized by sports professionals for their system of scoring in compiling ratings based on a computerized scoring system.

4. ESPN (EntertainmentandSportsProgrammingNetwork the largest American cable sports channel. The channel was founded in 1979 and today it broadcasts in more than 200 countries with an audience of more than 94 million subscribers. In fairness, it is worth noting that boxing on ESPN is not a frequent guest and does not have a large representation in the channel’s television network. American football and basketball are a much higher priority. ESPN is not able to compete with two monsters of boxing television broadcasts HBO and Showtime and is content with broadcasts of not so rated matches. Nevertheless, the channel’s grid contains many analytical programs with the participation of high-profile sports analysts. So, for example, in the preparation of the P4P ESPN rating, among others, recognized authorities in the field of professional boxing Dan Rafael and Teddy Atlas participate.

5.6 Bleacher report and Boxingscene -the two most reputable online portals providing analytical and news information about boxing.

The owner Bleacher reportis a company Time Warner which includes, in addition to such giants as Time Inc., Warner Bros. Entertainment, Time Warner Cable, CNN is also HBO - one of the two leading boxing television channels.

Chief editor   Boxingscenecliff Rold is a former member of The Ring magazine and one of the founders of the aforementioned TBRB

7. Allboxing -perhaps the most popular and authoritative, in my opinion, site in the post-Soviet space, dedicated to martial arts and professional boxing in particular, and one of the authors of the site, Grigory Stangrit, seems to be becoming the main television “voice” of professional boxing broadcast on Russian television.

So, we see that the opinions of various publications when compiling their ratings sometimes differ, but in general, almost all ratings have the same names. The discrepancies for the most part relate to the places occupied by certain fighters.

  • FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR.
  • JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
  • MANNY PACQUIAO
  • WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO
  • SERGEY KOVALEV
  • GUILLERMO RIGONDEAUX
  • ROMAN GONZALEZ
  • TIM BRADLEY

And two fighters were mentioned in the five P4P lists:

  • GENNADY GOLOVKIN
  • CARL FROCH

Thus, our “magnificent” dozen of my combined P4P ratings have already been formed. Those who scored the least number of “hits” in the ratings, unfortunately, are left overboard. The number of those left overboard was fighters whose names were mentioned in the ratings only 1-2 times:

  • JUAN FRANCISCO ESTRADA 2 times
  • MIGUEL COTTO 2 times
  • CANELO ALVAREZ 1 time
  • KEITH THURMAN 1 time
  • ADONIS STEVENSON 1 time

It remains only to "arrange" the names of the boxers who fell into the TOP-10 in their places. I will try to do this as objectively as possible, without taking into account personal likes and dislikes.

In order to do this, each boxer will be assigned points from 1 to 10, depending on what place the boxer occupied in the ratings given by me. That is, if a boxer took the 1st place in the rating, he is awarded 10 points, if 2nd place is 9 points, 3rd is 8 points and so on, who takes 10th place, respectively, 1 point. Then we sum up all the points scored by the fighters. Summing up all the “points” scored by boxers, we get   UNITED P4R RATING.

The expected rating is led by a wide margin, going on the 1st and 2nd place, respectively Floyd Mayweather Jr   and Manny Pacquiao. It is possible that after May 2, they may change places, but they are unlikely to greatly reduce their positions in any version of the end of their personal confrontation. Undefeated Roman Gonzalez,   debuting in May on the HBO on the undercard of the battle Golovkin vs Monroe Jr., and the undisputed heavyweight leader Vladimir Klichko   scored almost the same number of points and follow each other in 3rd and 4th place, respectively. I think that they are also not threatened to leave the upper half of dozens of P4P. From the next trinity, taking places from 5th to 7th and scoring 34, 33 and 31 points, it seems to me that the Mexican veteran Juan Manuel Marquez   will soon leave our rating or "slide" from taking 5th place to its lower part. His last fight dates back to May 17, 2014, and according to the rules of most of the authors, the ratings given by me, the boxer leaves the list in case of more than a year of “downtime”. But Marquez is already 41 and he has a sore knee, and he has not yet decided on his next opponent. Tim Bradley   (33 points) and Guillermo Rigondo(31 points) have also not yet decided on their next opponents. In the event that Miguel Cotto becomes Bradley’s next opponent, Tim has every chance, in the event of a favorable outcome, to “fly high” in all P4P ratings, but the defeat will not “throw” him out of the TOP-10 list and it is quite possible even to leave him in his former positions middle of the list. The talented US-Cuban Guillermo Rigondo broke a “big” unification battle with Leo Santa Cruz and his position in the ranking will depend heavily on his next opponent, but I don’t think that someone will fight with someone who will allow Rigondo to greatly increase his position in P4P, and in case of a successful performance of the fighters from the bottom of the list, it is possible and will lower it by a couple of positions. Gennady Golovkin   (8th place) and Sergey Kovalev(9th place) - two fighters from the post-Soviet space are just beginning to climb to the top of the P4P ratings. Both began to fall into the ratings of P4P recently. Both, in my opinion, have excellent prospects in order to significantly rise and firmly gain a foothold in the highest positions on the TOR-10 P4P list. Both need big unification fights for this. Gennady has the opportunity to meet with the winner of the Andy Lee - Peter Quillin pair for the WBO belt or with the Hassan N "Dam N" winner Zhickam - David Lemieux for the IBF belt. Kovaleva, I hope that in the fall there will be a big unifying battle with Adonis Stevenson for the title of absolute champion in light heavyweight. If our fighters win in these hypothetical battles, this will allow them to significantly increase in ratings. And finally Carl Froch. The Briton apparently is going to end his glorious career and, therefore, is “looking” for himself a good money battle. It is possible that this year he will nevertheless agree with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to fight in Las Vegas, and perhaps he will have a fight appointed by the WBA with the returning Andre Ward. One way or another, both fights will allow him to maintain his position in the P4P rating.

My assumptions of the most likely candidates for getting into the P4P rating are Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez. Cotto's list of contenders on June 6 includes the names of Cornelius Bandrage, Timothy Bradley and Brandon Rios. The victory over any of them, especially Bradley, will allow Miguel to regain its former high positions in the ratings. Alvarez will hold a duel with James Kirkland on May 9 and, it seems to me, will win, which can also help him move up the P4P ladder.

If these two boxers are included in the combined P4P rating, they will be able to slightly reduce the hegemony of the welterweights, which make up 40% of my list of TOP-10

So, we are waiting for big fights in May - June 2015, according to the results of which, I think, some changes in ratings are waiting for us pound for poundworld professional boxing about which I will definitely inform you in my blog.

pound fo pound - abbr. P4P) - the term used in martial arts, mainly in boxing, in relation to a fighter who is recognized as the best, regardless of weight category. The term came into use thanks to boxer Benny Leonard, who dominated as a lightweight champion from May 1917 to January 1925. Experts claimed that Leonard was the best pound-for-pound. Most historians believe that the concept of the best fighter outside the weight category arose in the 40s with the advent of Sugar Ray Robinson. Many to this day recognize him as the best boxer of all time. In 1990, the term gained new popularity when the first list of the best boxers according to the magazine “Ring” came out.
