Well, it was in the vast expanses of Belarus not too famous, but quite a skillful studio Wargaming.net. Founded back in 1998, for the time being it was known exclusively for the fact that the guys who work there are able to fulfill their obligations for reasonable money. There were releases of several games on the studio’s account, improvements for third-party clients and other similar orders.

Creating World Of Tanks

A heartwarming conversation about the fate of World Of Tanks (WoT) took place on December 12, 2008 and lasted several hours. The developers faced a dilemma that was quite difficult to solve. So, there is some serious money that Yahoo paid. There is a desire to do something epoch-making and. And, most importantly, multi-user is already in development.

As you already understood, in the end a phrase was uttered that dotted all the "i". I can not vouch for the verbatimity of what was said, but the main message was as follows: to hell with the orcs, let's make tanks! From that moment, work began on " Tankodrome". Yes, the working title of the game was just that.

Oh, how many failures the studio had to hear when it tried to take serious investors with whom it could share the financial burden of working on World Of Tanks. Orcs and elves were understood and approved by many, but nobody wanted to invest in incomprehensible who needed tanks. Today, these people probably bite their elbows, but at that time they laughed at Wargaming.net studio, considering them visionaries, preoccupied with a disastrous and unpromising “project”.

And yet, despite the silly hooting, Wargaming.net continued to work on World Of Tanks. In April 2009, the official announcement of the game was released, and in September of the same year alpha testing began, for which there were only five tank models and one incomplete map. Yes, not a lot, but dashing trouble has begun!

In 2008, Wargaming was working on a multiplayer online fantasy game. However, in parallel there was an active discussion of the project, which would become truly original, not like the others. The main option was a game dedicated to military equipment of the mid-twentieth century. It was necessary to choose what technique to make the game about: ships, planes or tanks.

On December 12, 2008, a conversation took place in Moscow, which finally decided the fate of the new project. Pyotr Bityukov, Victor Kisly, Vyacheslav Makarov and Marat Karpeko, during a discussion that lasted several hours, decided to make the game specifically about tanks. Moreover, there were models of tanks being developed for the strategic game Operation Bagration. Draft trees were ready in just a few days. By the way, it was originally planned that multiple launch rocket systems would be introduced into the game, but soon they decided to abandon this kind of equipment.

In the spring of 2009, game designer Sergey Burkatovsky came to the company. During the time that he held this position, and subsequently the position of a leading game designer, he invented and realized a huge number of gaming opportunities.

The project was given the code name "Tankodrome". Work on the first version went until the summer of 2009. Such interesting pictures could then be seen in the game.

The first cards to appear in the Tankodrom were Prokhorovka and Karelia. The designer of these cards was Heinrich Kravtsov. By the way, “Karelia” in the course of work on it was jokingly called “Shabany” by the name of one of the most remote regions of Minsk.

The first focus test of the game took place on July 24, 2009. On this day, a heavy rain fell in Minsk in the city center, a real flood occurred. That was the way testers went to the company’s office.

Chapter 2. On the eve of release

The World of Tanks project got its current name before the KRI-2009 conference. The name was chosen based on the fact that from the very beginning the developers decided that a large number of military equipment of different nations would be present in the game.

In November 2010, the third, American tank development line appeared in the game. The project is increasingly consistent with the global name.

In the winter of 2010, a closed beta testing of the game began. That's what the hangar interface looked like at that time. Only 481 people are online now.

On August 12, 2010, the game was officially released on the Russian server. By this time, about 16,000 people were simultaneously playing on the game server of the Russian-speaking region.

January 2011 was the month for the project, when the bar of one million users was twice taken. On January 4, it was precisely this number of people that was registered worldwide. And on January 18, a millionth user came to a Russian-language server.

Another achievement of January was the world record for the simultaneous stay of players on the same server - 74 536 people. Then this number seemed very large, but time has shown that this is far from the limit.

At that moment, only single, platoon and company battles were available for players. However, players have already been given the opportunity to join clans. And so that these clans could fully test their strength in battles against each other, the World War was invented. The creator of this global testing ground for clan battles was Cyril Mal. The World War II test began on February 1, 2011. On February 10, the first redistribution of territories on the Global Map began.


On February 24, 2011, the World of Tanks project hit the Guinness Book of Records, setting another world record for users staying on the game server at the same time. So far, no other game has collected 91,311 people on one cluster.

In the spring of 2011, Wargaming began to conquer the East. March 15, 2011 the release of the game in China.

On April 1, 2011, players watched the first release of Wargaming TV. This infotainment program subsequently became very popular among players. In the fall of 2011, it finally became clear that the game server could not cope with the number of users who play tanks daily. And then one game server was first divided into two, and then into three clusters. Update 0.7.0, released December 13, 2011, solved the problem with the "lags" and "slowdown" of the game. Then the players got the opportunity to personalize the appearance of their tank: camouflage appeared in the game.

Before the New Year, the number of nations in the game replenished France. Fast and maneuverable tanks equipped with an automatic loader immediately gained immense popularity. Not a single company battle or a battle on the Global Map is now complete without them.


The advent of French tanks, the introduction of multi-cluster, and other changes led to the fact that in February 2012, on the Russian-speaking game clusters, the number of players simultaneously online in the game exceeded the line of 400 thousand people.

March 29, 2012 update 0.7.2 was released. It added variety to the gameplay thanks to the emergence of new skills for the crew. The Sixth Sense, King of the impassability, Fighting Brotherhood and other useful abilities allowed the game to open even more fully.

On May 3, along with update 0.7.3, the second branch of Soviet heavy tanks appeared in the game. She was crowned by IS-4 - a combat vehicle that has long earned the legendary status in the game. The essence of the changes.

* Completely redone the visual and sound components of personal combat missions.
  * Added brand new and unique rewards.
  * The conditions of the tasks are revised so that the main reward for the operation is always relevant for the player.
  * Added "Order Forms", which will greatly facilitate the performance of personal combat missions.

Interface and sound

- Redone all the interfaces of personal combat missions:

1. The entry point to personal combat missions has been changed: now it is located on the top panel of the Hangar under the button "To battle!" and is called "Campaigns";
  2. Added the “General Staff” screen with a map of all operations;
  3. The operations screen has been completely redesigned: now it is a geographical map with tasks in the form of areas on it;
  4. Completely redesigned screen awards for the campaign:
a) Now the main award - the car - is located in the center of the screen;
  b) Operation statistics added: now you know how many credits you can still earn.

- Added new music:
  1. A music track has been recorded specifically for personal combat missions;
  2. Interactive music has been added: the more tasks are completed within one branch, the more intense the music.

A new way to get premium cars.

"Reward sheets" are deleted, instead of them "Components" of the machine are entered:

1. In order to receive a prize car for an operation, it is necessary to assemble all 5 components: a hull, a chassis, a gun, a power plant and a radio station;
  2. Each component has its own task branch in the operation:
  a) Powerplant - task line for light tanks;
  b) Running - task line for medium tanks;
  c) Hull (+ tower or wheelhouse) - task line for heavy tanks;
  d) Gun - task branch for tank destroyers;
  e) Radio station - task branch for self-propelled guns.
  3. To get the component, you must complete the final fifteenth task in the corresponding branch.

Order forms.

A new entity “Order Forms” has been added:

1. To earn an order form, you must complete any final task of any branch with honors;
  2. Order forms can be placed (that is, applied) in any tasks. Thus:
  a) The selected task will be automatically considered completed without distinction;
  b) You will receive a reward for the basic conditions of the task;
  c) The spent order form will remain embedded in the task;
  d) The pledged order form does not disappear, but is temporarily frozen until you take it back.
  3. To pick up the mortgaged order form, it is necessary to complete the task in which it is placed, with honors. Thus, you get your order form back and can reuse it.
  4. The number of order forms necessary for laying in tasks:
  a) For any task from 1 to 14 - 1 order form;
  b) In task 15, 4 order forms.

To summarize: order forms can be used to skip complex or uninteresting tasks for you. And most importantly: you can put order forms in the final, fifteenth task in the branch, even if the previous 14 tasks have not yet passed. Thus, you can instantly get the 5th missing component of the machine by completing 4 task branches with honors.

New rewards.

1. Added a new award - stripes:
  a) In each operation, 2 patches can be earned:
  * A badge of the II degree is issued simultaneously with the receipt of the award car;
* A badge of the I degree is awarded for completing with honors all 75 tasks of a specific operation.
  b) For the performance of all tasks in all operations you receive a special unique badge “Champion I Campaign”
  2. Added a new award - camouflage schemes:
  a) In each operation, you can earn a set of 3 (summer, winter, desert) unique camouflage patterns:
  * A set of 3 camouflage schemes for the award car is issued for completing all 75 tasks of the operation;
  * The same set of schemes is unlocked for use on all vehicles of the same nation as the award vehicle for completing all 75 tasks of the operation with honors.

Change task conditions

The tasks in each operation were revised to increase the relevance of the main award. For example, now all the tasks from the StuG IV operation can actually be performed on Tier V vehicles, from the T28 Heavy Tank Concept operation at Tier VII and so on. However, participation restrictions have not changed. You can perform tasks of any operation even at the X level of technology.

We also made additional conditions more varied in the final, fifteenth tasks of each branch. This is due to the fact that the additional reward for tasks completing the branches has become more valuable: now Order forms are located there.

Note! If, by the terms of the task, you need, for example, to find 5 cars in a battle, and you find 7, then obviously, the task will be successfully counted. This rule is valid for all numerical conditions.

Bons and Medals

Starting from 9.20.1, upon receiving a medal from the categories “Epic Achievements” and “Heroes of the Battle”, the player will receive additional promotion in the form of a bon. Bonds will not be awarded for cumulative medals. The number of bonuses is not final and can be changed. Read more in detail.

Improvements for the training ground mode

Changes:
  * Disabled options are disabled in the context menus of the windows for improving the machine, the Tree of research, as well as the carousel of the equipment.
  * Balanced rewards (credits and experience) for victories and defeats during the passage of the training ground.
  * The accrual of rewards for completing the training ground is now displayed in the notification center.
  * Added notification of players that they will not receive a reward when they re-pass the training ground.
